Candidate biography (submitted by candidate):

I’m running for re-election to one of 3 At-large seats on the Durham City Council.  I have served on the City Council since 2003, and was re-elected in 2007.  In previous elections I have been endorsed by the Durham People’s Alliance, the Friends of Durham, the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People, the NC Sheriff-Police Alliance, the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, the Triangle Greens, The Herald-Sun, The News & Observer, and the Independent Weekly.

I ran for Council because I care about Durham and the issues facing the people of Durham.  I want to continue my work on Council to keep Durham moving forward.   I serve on the Joint City/County Planning Committee (JCCPC), the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC), the Transit Referendum Steering Committee, and Project Safe Neighborhoods.  I have also served on the Downtown Durham, Inc. (DDI) Board of Directors, the Gang Oversight and Community Advisory Committees, the Performing Arts Theatre Subcommittee, and the Personnel, Livable Wage, Insurance, Procedures, Fitness Leadership, and Minority and Women Business Enterprise subcommittees.

I’ve lived in Durham for 25 years and in the Triangle for more than 30 years.  I’ve raised my 3 children here. I have degrees in political science, economics and public health from UNC-Chapel Hill.  I work in global health and have worked in the U.S., Latin America, and Africa in maternal and child health - trying to expand access to needed services for low-income people.  I speak fluent Spanish.

In the mid-90s, I was the president of the Durham People’s Alliance, a progressive political action group, and President of the Burton Elementary School PTA.  I’ve been active in the Durham and NC State Democratic Party.

Please cast one of your three votes to re-elect me, Diane Catotti, to the Durham City Council.

Candidate statement:

I have been honored to serve you on the Durham City Council since 2003.  Because I have a strong desire to continue my work on Council and to keep Durham moving forward, I have decided to seek re-election for one of three At-Large seats on the Durham City Council.

As I promised in my 2003 and 2007 campaigns, I have worked hard on Council.  I am consistently well-prepared for and present at Council and committee meetings – where much of the work is accomplished behind the scenes.  I have been open to citizen input, and have strived to be reasoned and fair in my decision-making and an effective leader on key issues.

Under my leadership, Durham has:

  • stronger zoning regulations and housing code enforcement
  • stronger and safer neighborhoods
  • more safe and affordable housing
  • a beautiful and successful new Performing Arts Theatre (DPAC)
  • a thriving and reviving downtown – have you been downtown lately?
  • expanded job, recreational, and after-school programs for our youth.

I have fought for and supported additional funding to:

  • address deferred maintenance needs in City streets, facilities, fleet and parks
  • revitalize downtown Durham and surrounding neighborhoods
  • strengthen our law enforcement capabilities
  • support our transit system and plan for future expansion and light rail, and
  • make Durham a leader in sustainable growth, to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Durham is an exciting place to live and work. We’ve accomplished a lot, but there is more to do. If re-elected, I will continue to provide leadership in support of the issues I care most about: effective fiscal management and accountability, reasonable land use and planning, affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and expanded opportunities for our youth.

Please support me with one of your three votes for Durham City Council.
